BMX rider at US Grands

Local BMX rider Teigen Pascual rode to a sixth-place finish in the main for 13 Girls at the US Grands on the weekend. The event, which attracts approximately 3,000 riders, was held from Nov. 24 to 27 in Tulsa, Okla. and has been called “the Super Bowl of BMX racing.” Pascual had transferred through to the eighths in her open class and quarters in her 20-inch class for the last day of racing.

Squamish BMX is also holding its annual general meeting on Monday, Dec. 5 from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Black Tusk Room at Brennan Park.

Physical Literacy

This interactive session goes over how to incorporate physical literacy into practice and programs through effective methods and delivery of enriched activities into a variety of settings. These can be easily implemented by a coach, physical educator, generalist teacher, childcare or early years educator, recreation or fitness leader or parent. Physical literacy will be also be discussed as a means to enhance movement and increase active participation, as well as to reduce injury risk.

The session will take place Dec. 8 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Brennan Park. Register at www.trackie.com.

Jingle Blades results

Several members of the Squamish Skating Club took part in the Jingle Blades competition hosted by the Grandview Skating Club in Vancouver from Nov. 25 to 27. The event had 500 skaters taking part.

Among the results, Noortje Morsink finished second with a 21.8 score and Alina Murphy was third with a 19.12 in the Star 7 women’s category. Kaitlyn Wittow was fourth in the Star 4 girls 13 and over group 1’s free program.

The club is also presenting its show, A Disney Christmas, on Dec. 7 and 10 at 5 p.m. at Brennan Park. There will be silent auctions, 50/50 draws and raffles.

Rugby sevens at Quest

Quest University will be the site of a rugby sevens mini-tournament this weekend.

The event will include the Quest men’s and women’s teams, the Camosun men’s team, the Squamish Axemen men’s team, the UFV women’s team and couple of women’s teams from UBC, though organizers said they were trying to add a couple of additional teams to the tournament.

The matches will take place Dec. 4 on Quest’s turf field starting at 10 a.m. and run through the day.

Martin on B.C. alpine team

Local skier Mikayla Martin from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club has once again been named to BC Alpine’s 2016-17 ski team to represent B.C. this season in regional, national and Nor-Am competitions. She will join eight other members for this year’s events. 

The first race of the season is set for Lake Louise on Dec. 7, although Martin has been recovering from an injury she sustained while training in Europe.

Loop the Lakes registration

Registration is now open for the 14th annual Loop the Lakes Trail Race. The classic Squamish run takes place on May 13 with 8-km, 15-km and 21-km distances.
