Loop off to soccer nationals
Squamish youth Stuart Loop, who plays for Mountain United FC’s U16 team as a starting right midfielder, and his teammates will be off to the nationals this fall in Alberta.
Loop, a student at Howe Sound Secondary, played youth soccer in Squamish and has been in the BC Premier League for 3 years, winning two silver medals as provincial finalist and now a gold.
Mountain beat Coastal FC 4-0 in the provincial finals, which took place in Kelowna the last weekend in June.
Loop and Mountain United will be going to Lethbridge for the nationals held Oct. 5 to 10
BC Bike Race rolls through
The BC Bike Race will be coming through the Squamish area as part of its near-weeklong circuit.
The mountain bike race starts July 7 in Cumberland and ends a week later in Whistler. The Squamish leg takes place on July 12.
The race includes legs in other communities like Sechelt, North Vancouver and Powell River.
The event attracts roughly 600 riders from 36 countries. Several Squamish-area riders are registered to compete: Quinn Moberg, Greg Day, Rowan Thornton, Dwayne Kress, Chris Christie and Colleen Keyland.
The local stretch, described as the riders’ favourite for the last five years, covers 53 kilometres and includes 1,944 metres of climbing.

Pirates swimming meet
The Pirates’ summer swim team took part in the North Shore Winter Club Marlins’ meet on the June 25-26 weekend.
Achieving first place were: in A division Jeremy Elithorpe 6-under 25M freestyle; Felix Fota 6-under 25M back stroke; Alex Jevons 100M back stroke 50M free; in Div. 2 boys freestyle relay (Levi Karasz, Lukas Buck, Brian McDonald and Ryan Sweeny, who set a meet record); in B division, Levi Karasz 50M breast; Lukas Buck 100M free; and Brian McDonald 100M individual medley.
In second place were: in A division, Alex Jevons 100M fly, 100M free; Avery Masselink, 100M back, 100M breast; Ryan Sweeny, 50M back, 100M free, 50M free, 100M IM, Felix Fota 25M kick; in Div. 8 girls relay (Alex Jevons, Avery Masselink, Kelly Kaye and Jaina Jose); in B division, Kai Bolla, 50M breast, 100M free; Zachary Lorimer, 100M free; Lukas buck, 100M IM; and Joy Jose 50M fly.
In third place were: in A division, Felix Fota, 25M breast; Jeremy Elithorpe, 25M kick; Ryan Sweeny, 50M fly; Eli Tindall, 100M back, 50M fly; Mees Haddeman, 100M free, 50M, free; Jaina Jose, 50M fly; Brian McDonald, 100M free; in B division, Sydney Cramb, 100M IM, 50M free; Lukas Buck 50M breast, 50M back; and Elias Siermaczeski, 50M fly.
There was also a fun parent relay, with the Pirates represented by eight parents swimming 25 metres each: Kelly Kaye, Natasha Wrenshall, Grace Taveres, Annalise Polman, Steve Sutherland, Pascal Bolla, Rod Castellanos and Aaron Lawton.
Uunila places fourth
Linnea Uunila competed in the Hayman Classic Youth Stage Race, Provincial Youth Cycling Championships in Penticton earlier in June. She has competed several years in triathlon, but this was her first time competing in a high-calibre road cycling event. In the under 15 girls category, she placed fourth overall despite her inexperience and the fact she was the only independent rider (all others were on teams).
The overall results were based on three days of racing a 15-kilometre time trial, criterium (racing on a closed circuit) and 40-kilometre road race.
The road race was especially exciting as she was only 0.7 seconds behind the winner after an hour and 24 minutes of riding.
As well, she has also been chosen to represent Squamish and Zone 5 (Vancouver – Coastal) for the triathlon in the BC Summer Games this July.
