Member of Parliament Pamela Goldsmith-Jones has announced she won't be seeking re-election in the upcoming federal election.
Goldsmith-Jones said in a letter released to the media Wednesday that she told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, May 8, of her decision.
"I feel that I need to spend time closer to home, particularly with my parents," MP for West Vancouver- Sunshine Coast- Sea to Sky Country said in the letter.
She will continue as MP and as Minister Chrystia Freeland's Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs until the election.
She recommitted her belief in the Liberals and the lately beleaguered Trudeau.
"Going into the next election, I will do all I can to help ensure we have an outstanding candidate and that the Liberal Party continues to have a strong voice in western Canada," she said, adding that she appreciated the passion of the electors in the Sea to Sky.
She laid out some of the accomplishments working with the community during her time in office including "environmental restoration" in Squamish.
Goldsmith-Jones became MP when she unseated Conservative John Weston in 2015.
Before heading to Ottawa, she served as the mayor of West Vancouver from 2005 to 2011.
The next federal election is on Oct. 21.
