Update: Electrocuted seagulls cause power outage in Richmond city centre

Two seagulls were electrocuted just before the power outage.

A power outage in Richmond's Golden Village affected more than 300 B.C. Hydro customers on Wednesday morning.

The outage was caused by birds contacting BC Hydro wires, which ultimately affected 327 customers south of Cambie Road, west of Garden City Road, north of Alexandra Road and east of No. 3 Road.

The outage happened at 7:15 a.m. and power was restored by 9:03 a.m.

Richmond resident Michelle Yu told the Richmond News she saw two seagulls being electrocuted by the electrical line near Hazelbridge Way and Leslie Road just before the power went out in the area.

"It sounded like a huge gunshot," said Yu, adding it was a "startling" sound.

"I was maybe a good 30 feet away."
