Security camera catches black bear relaxing in B.C. family's swimming pool

"He just sort of pulled back the pool cover and got in."

A black bear spent some time cooling down overnight in a swimming pool in a Kamloops backyard.

Sonja Arsenault said she awoke on Thursday morning to a video clip from her security system showing a bear enjoying the swimming pool outside her Dufferin home a little after 2 a.m. The camera only caught the start of the bear’s visit.

“He just sort of pulled back the pool cover and got in,” she said.

“It looks like he sat in there for a while, almost like a hot tub, because there was a big dirt pile where he sat on the steps."

Arsenault said this is the first time she’s caught a bear taking a dip in her pool, but wildlife is always close by in her neighbourhood.

“We get a lot of coyotes and a lot of deer,” she said.

“I mean, we chose to build where there is a lot of wildlife. This is us intruding on their regular living quarters and habitat, so I feel like we need to make accommodations for them.”
