New Westminster green thumbs looking to expand on their spring garden will be able to find more colourful flora at a plant sale this weekend.
And the proceeds are set to help neglected and unwanted parrots receive care in the lower mainland.
The Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary will be setting up shop near the New West-Burnaby border on Sunday, April 21, complete with indoor and outdoor plant options for interested residents.
This includes a "large selection of rare orchid cacti in many colours," according to a statement sent to the Record.
Greyhaven, a non-profit organization based in Surrey since the early 1990s, says it relies entirely on donations to provide treatment for parrots in their care.
Species listed on its website include cockatoos, cockatiels, Amazons and macaws. The parrots start out as pets but are separated from their families.
"Through our adoption program, we strive to place parrots in new loving homes," reads Greyhaven's mission statement on its website, noting the cost to support the birds are "astronomical."
"We provide education and support to parrot guardians and the general public. We oppose the breeding and selling of parrots through pet stores, bird marts or via the internet."
Day-to-day costs for Greyhaven consist of medical care, rent, utilities, food, equipment and staff salaries.
Sunday's sale is set to feature "a variety of unique finds" alongside baked goods, fairy garden items, and pottery and artwork by Janine Schrödter.
As well, Nicholas Read, a retired Metro Vancouver journalist, animal activist and awarding winning author will be signing books.
Greyhaven's spring plant sale is scheduled for April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 1522 London St.
