Rangers walk-off Dodgers 4-3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Adolis García hit a two-run homer off former Texas closer Kirby Yates in the ninth inning, lifting the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Adolis García hit a two-run homer off former Texas closer Kirby Yates in the ninth inning, lifting the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

The fourth home run of the season from García kept Japanese rookie Roki Sasaki from getting his first major league victory. The 23-year-old right-hander pitched six solid innings in the longest of his five big league outings.

Josh Smith almost tied it against Yates (1-1) leading off the Texas ninth, missing a homer by a couple of feet foul down the line in right field. Smith slapped a double the other way before García’s 394-foot drive into the seats in left.

The Dodgers were without two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who announced the birth of his first child — a girl — during the game, as did manager Dave Roberts during an in-game interview on national television.

The defending champions were well on their way to a 2-0 start in the three-game series matching the past two World Series winners before García’s blast.

Sasaki surrendered a two-run homer to Kyle Higashioka in the third but allowed just two hits. The right-hander walked three and struck out four.

Freddie Freeman hit a tying two-run homer in the fourth, and Max Muncy put the Dodgers ahead with a two-out, ground rule double later in the inning.

Jacob Webb (2-0) pitched two scoreless inning for Texas.

TIGERS 3, ROYALS 1

DETROIT (AP) — Spencer Torkelson hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the fifth inning off Seth Lugo, and Detroit extended the Kansas City's losing streak to six with a win.

Detroit won the first three games of the four-game series and is 8-1 at Comerica Park, its best home start since nine straight wins to begin 1993.

Casey Mize (3-1) gave up one run and four hits in seven innings. He has allowed one run or none in three of four starts. Will Vest pitched the ninth for his first save this season, finishing a six-hitter.

Torkelson hit his seventh home run this season, giving him 21 RBIs, driving a 1-2 splitter into the Tigers bullpen in left-center.

Lugo (1-3) gave up five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He had tied his career high by allowing four homers in his previous start, at Yankee Stadium.

Kansas City is 1-8 on a 10-game trip that started in Cleveland and New York. The Royals are 8-14 and have gone 15 straight games without scoring more than four runs. They are 4 for 32 with runners in scoring position in the series.

PHILLIES 11, MARLINS 10

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trea Turner had four hits, Bryson Stott and Johan Rojas each had three and Philadelphia survived Miami’s six-run ninth inning to win.

Philadelphia scored seven runs over the third and fourth inning to seemingly blow open the game and went on to outhit the Marlins 18-15 win for the fourth time in five games.

Dane Myers hit a three-run homer and Liam Hicks added a two-run shot, both off Jordan Romano as part of a six-run ninth for the Marlins. Romano, in the midst of a rough first season in Philly, was heavily booed as he trudged off the mound.

José Alvarado got the final out in the ninth for his fifth save.

The NL East champion Phillies pounded a Marlins staff sapped of real depth this early in the season. Cal Quantrill (1-2) gave up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings and Patrick Monteverde, in his big-league debut, allowed four runs over 3 2/3 innings.

The Phillies have gone 11 straight series at home without losing a series. The Phillies can complete a three-game sweep on Sunday.

Corbin Carroll had three hits, including his seventh homer, and has reached base in 27 straight games dating to Sept. 23. Tim Tawa added a solo drive as Arizona lost its second straight following a five-game winning streak.

Carroll homered in the first but Chicago took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half and added four runs in the second as Suzuki and Busch both homered on fastballs from Zac Gallen (1-3). Suzuki’s two-run drive put the Cubs ahead 5-1.

Caleb Thielbar (1-0), the first of three Cubs relievers, threw two perfect innings. Chicago’s bullpen retired 14 straight hitters before Tawa connected and Carroll drew a walk off Daniel Palencia with two outs in the ninth. Arizona had just four hits.

GUARDIANS 3, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cleveland’s Kyle Manzardo spoiled Paul Skenes’ bobblehead day, taking the young Pittsburgh ace deep in the Guardians’ victory.

Manzardo led off the seventh by taking the first pitch he saw from Skenes (2-2) and sending it over the right-field stands. The fifth home run of the season by Cleveland’s designated hitter landed 411 feet from home plate before bouncing into the Allegheny River.

Steven Kwan had two hits for the Guardians, including a run-scoring single off Skenes in the third. Nolan Jones also had two hits for Cleveland.

Ben Lively (1-2) and four relievers combined to hold the Pirates to six hits. Emmanuel Clase worked the ninth for his fourth save.

Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer for Boston, which won its fourth straight.

Luis Robert Jr. hit a two-run shot for the White Sox, who lost their sixth in a row and fell to 4-16 and 0-8 on the road, the worst road start in team history.

The Red Sox nearly wasted a scoreless outing by Garrett Crochet, who took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a victory against the White Sox in his previous start. He gave up four singles while striking out seven over six innings on Saturday.

Boston took a 3-0 lead when Devers hit a fastball from Shane Smith that left Fenway Park over the Monster in the fifth.

Chicago tied it with a three-run seventh. Chase Meidroth had an RBI single before Robert hit a hanging sweeper.

ORIOLES 9, REDS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) — Ramón Laureano came off the bench and hit two home runs, and Baltimore went deep five times in its victory over Cincinnati.

Cedric Mullins and Gunnar Henderson led off the first with back-to-back home runs off Hunter Greene (2-2), who lasted only three innings and allowed five runs. Jordan Westburg also homered for Baltimore, snapping an 0-for-30 draught with a solo shot in the seventh.

Young allowed seven hits and a walk among his first 10 batters, but a pair of Cincinnati outs on the bases helped him avoid excessive damage. Gavin Lux put the Reds up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first, and after the homers by Mullins and Henderson, Jake Fraley went deep to lead off the second, tying the game at 2.

TJ Friedl had four hits and a walk, including an RBI double in the second that put the Reds up 3-2. Young did not allow a hit after that.

Walker, who was moved out of the cleanup spot for the first time after batting .159 through the first 19 games, homered on a 1-0 sweeper from Michael King with two outs, his second of the season.

Bryan Abreu worked a scoreless eighth inning and Josh Hader, on his bobblehead giveaway night, pitched a scoreless ninth and got former Padres teammate Yuli Gurriel to fly out to end the game. Tayler Scott (1-1) worked two innings of relief and earned the win.
