1 dead after being shot by police in Surrey, B.C.'s police watchdog investigating

A person was fatally shot by police after an interaction near a Surrey secondary school.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is investigating a Feb. 9 case in Surrey.

A person was shot and killed by police in Surrey and B.C.’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate. 

RCMP officers responded to a school in Surrey at about 2:40 p.m. on Feb. 9 for reports of a person armed with a firearm.

The incident unfolded near Clayton Heights Secondary School.

According to the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), there was reportedly an interaction between the person and police near the intersection of 70 Avenue and 185 Street during which shots were fired by police.

"The person sustained a gunshot-related injury,” says a spokesperson with IIO. 

The person, whose age has not been released, died at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident. 

Police have cordoned off the area for the investigation.
