A graduate of Coquitlam’s Gleneagle Secondary picked up second place and $1,500 last week at Speaker Slam’s annual Inspirational Speaking Finals in Toronto.
Alana Moor took silver at the Nov. 9 competition for her speech “Walking Through Fear”; the event was held at the CBC Glenn Gould Studio and focused on the theme of “brave.”
Moor, who was sentenced to 81 months in prison in Panama after drugs were discovered in a suitcase that her boss told her to carry back to Canada, recounted her story of surviving and helping others during a violent jail attack.

"Bravery isn't reserved for superheroes," Moor said in her speech last Saturday.
"Everyone here tonight has their own version of ‘brave’ and, though our experiences differ, we share the common victory of walking through fear and saying yes to the unknown."
After her release from prison in 2021, Moor started a nonprofit to offer packages to incarcerated women in Central America, as well as skills and language training. Today, she also has a life coaching business.
Speaker Slam co-founder Dan Shaikh described Moor’s journey as “one of true redemption and resilience,” he said in a news release.
Moor was up against 13 other finalists for the contest title and $5,000 cash prize.
Her second-place accolade also includes a media kit booster, media coaching, a marketing manuscript assessment, private coaching for an upcoming TEDx talk and a marketing audit.
