A serious collision involving four vehicles shut down a section of Highway 1 in Langley during the morning commute on Jan. 30.
The crash occurred around 6:20 a.m. near 200 Street.
Two people were taken to the hospital, as a precaution, for non-life-threatening injuries.
Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol says the crash caused a lot of damage.
"Given the speeds that were involved, given the damage that we see, it's obviously lucky, and we're happy that nobody was seriously hurt,” he says.
Investigators do believe speed is a factor.
“That caused a major problem for the morning commute going eastbound,” says McLaughlin. “This collision was spread over a really wide area.”
Photographs and video from the scene show a truck split over the highway median.
“A vehicle lost control that caused, ultimately, four vehicles to be involved in this crash and a lot of damage,” he says. “The HOV lane and the fast lane were the most impacted by the debris.”
McLaughlin says the driver of the truck that was heavily damaged did not appear to have serious injuries.
“We are really happy about that,” he says.
Police are investigating the collision and fines under the Motor Vehicle Act are likely coming.
“Sometimes, the vehicles that are most damaged, it wasn't their fault that the whole collision happened in the first place,” he tells Glacier Media.
"We are investigating. We're making progress until the investigation is over. We can't say for sure who's responsible, but we do expect that we will follow up with some Motor Vehicle Act offences.”
Cleanup is expected to take some time before the road is safe to be used.
As of 11 a.m., the left lane continues to be blocked and the HOV lane is closed.
