Delta police are on scene at 94/114th in North Delta dealing with a possible explosive shell that was recently discarded by someone.

Public affairs manager Acting Insp. James Sandberg told the Optimist that there is a closure in place and two homes have been evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

"We are awaiting the arrival of some specialists who can assess an old shell that has been located behind a bus shelter," said Sandberg. "It appears that someone had discarded this item recently."

Sandberg said the origin and use of this shell is not known.

He said it may be up to a couple of hours before some explosive disposal experts arrive on scene.

"We ask that if anybody has old explosives, shells, etc. and they are looking to dispose of these items, that they contact us by phone for disposal information. Please do not abandon these items in public places, and please don't bring them to the police department."
