A 49-year-old woman has been arrested in Vancouver for allegedly impersonating a nurse.

A Vancouver woman is in custody after spending a year impersonating a registered nurse at a Vancouver hospital police say.

Detectives from the Vancouver Police Department's (VPD) financial crime unit started working on the case in June after learning a woman at the BC Women's Hospital was using someone else's identity. While there she did provide medical care to patients.

"The investigation, led by VPD’s Financial Crime Unit, found the woman fraudulently used the name of a real nurse while providing medical care to patients at the hospital," state police in a press release.

They say she worked at the hospital for a year, from June 2020 to June 2021.

"Our detectives worked collaboratively with the Ottawa Police Service, which was conducting a parallel investigation into the same suspect,” says Const. Tania Visintin in the release.

“We don’t yet know how many people in Vancouver may have received treatment from the fraudulent nurse, but we’re working with the Provincial Health Services Authority to identify patients who may have had contact with her.”

Brigitte Cleroux, 49, is facing charges of fraud over $5,000 and personation with intent, states the VPD; the charges have been approved by the BC Prosecution Service. She will remain in custody until her next court appearance.
