"Shogun" wins four awards at the 2025 Golden Globes on Jan. 5, 2025. The TV series was filmed in the Tri-Cities.

A television drama that was largely filmed in Port Moody, Belcarra and Coquitlam took home four awards at the Golden Globes this weekend.

On Jan. 5, Shogun picked up accolades at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles for:

  • best television series (drama)
  • best performance by a male actor in a TV series (drama)
    • Hiroyuki Sanada
  • best performance by a female actor in a TV series (drama)
    • Anna Sawai
  • best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a TV series (drama)
    • Tadanobu Asano

The FX series was up against the hit dramas The Diplomat, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, Squid Game and The Day of the Jackal at the 82nd ceremony.

“Nothing about this show has been expected. It was made on the backs of 1,000s of fearless yes’s that we received over the years from our East meets West cast and crew,” said Shogun co-creator Justin Marks while accepting the best TV series drama prize.

Asano also called his award “a very big present.”

Based on the novel by James Clavell, the epic historical fiction that’s set in Japan in the 15th century centres on Lord Yoshii Toranga and the Englishman John Blackthorne.

A Japanese village was re-created near the Flavelle cedar mill in Port Moody; it has been rebuilt for additional filming this year.

A Japanese white pine tree used on the original set was donated and planted at Port Moody City Hall.

The Golden Globes wins come after Shogun clinched three Primetime Emmys last September, with Sanada and Sawai also winning accolades; as well, it earned the title of outstanding drama series.

The week prior, it reaped 14 Creative Arts Emmys for:

  • Outstanding casting for a drama series

  • Outstanding main title design
  • Outstanding period or fantasy/sci-fi hairstyling
  • Outstanding period or fantasy/sci-fi makeup
