A Surrey man allegedly stole a transport truck and assaulted a woman during a carjacking on July 5, 2024 in Langley.

A Surrey man left a path of destruction after allegedly stealing a woman's vehicle and a transport truck.

Edward Joseph Biwer, 33, has been arrested and charged after a police officer resorted to using their patrol vehicle to intercept the erratic driver on July 5.

During the middle of the day, Langley RCMP were notified that a woman was assaulted by a man during a carjacking in Langley Meadows.

Police responded to the area at 1:10 p.m. and were told the suspect got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and drove off erratically.

Less than 350 metres away, the driver was involved in a three-vehicle collision and tried to steal another vehicle. Police say the suspect was unsuccessful and ultimately fled on foot.

A person called police just one kilometre away to report a five-tonne truck had been stolen from 196 Street and Willowbrook Drive.

"Langley RCMP continued to receive several 911 calls to report the same stolen five-tonne truck being driven in a dangerous and erratic manner,” says Cpl. Zynal Sharoom.

The suspect then collided the truck into multiple parked vehicles on 200 Street. A Langley RCMP police officer used their vehicle to intercept the truck.

Sharoom says the police officer made contact with the front wheel of the stolen truck, disabling it from being operated further.

"The coordinated response by officers together with the numerous 911 calls from the public regarding this incident allowed police to apprehend the accused in a timely manner," says Sharoom.

Biwer is a Surrey man and has been charged with robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, mischief, assault, dangerous operations of a motor vehicle, driving while prohibited and failure to stop after an accident.

Anyone with dash-camera footage or video is asked to contact the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 and quote file number 2024-21188.
