A driver who fled Whistler police in a hurry last week still had time for a quick catnap before things went south.
On the evening of Friday, April 28, police said RCMP members were on foot patrol in the day lots when they noticed a driver they suspected was impaired. Officers asked the driver to pull over, but instead, he “took off,” according to a release.
Police said they later found the driver passed out in his seat. After waking up, the man refused to provide a breath sample and didn’t have a valid driver’s licence.
The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his car was impounded for 30 days, the release went on. He now has a future court date, facing charges of obstruction and driving while prohibited, police said.
That was one of seven roadside suspensions police handed out in Whistler between April 25 and May 1, including another 90-day prohibition and car impoundment; a trio of three-day driving prohibitions; and two 24-hour suspensions.
Purported bike thief makes getaway—on the bus
A purported bike thief made his getaway in comfort last week, allegedly skipping town with the stolen property on a commercial bus, police said.
Sometime on the evening of Thursday, April 27, Whistler RCMP received a report of a mountain bike that was stolen from the block of 4300 Blackcomb Way in the village. The bike is described as a 2018 GT Fury Garbo Edition model with a light blue frame. It was reportedly secured inside a staff locker at the time.
After reviewing video footage, police described the suspect as male, between 25 and 35 years old, about 5-6 tall, weighing 150 pounds, with tattoos on his hands. He was wearing a red sweater at the time of the alleged theft.
Mounties said the suspect is believed to have left Whistler with the bike via commercial bus at about 7 a.m. the following morning.
The investigation continues.
Nearly $3K in tools reported stolen from unlocked vehicle
A suspect made out with a haul of tools from an unlocked car parked in the village last week, police said.
On Friday, April 28, Whistler RCMP received a report of a theft of approximately $2,700 in tools from an underground lot in the 4200 block of Gateway Drive that happened sometime overnight. Investigators said Hitachi- and Milwaukee-brand tools were stolen, including drills, impact drivers, charging cables, and battery packs.
The file remains under investigation.
