An investigation into a fatal crash in Agassiz that left an entire family dead is still underway and could take weeks to determine what caused the collision.
Police responded to a serious collision on Lougheed Highway at 3:27 a.m. on July 9 and found that a vehicle and transport truck had collided.
Agassiz RCMP Sgt. Andy Lot explained how an officer responding to the scene saw something moving in the back of the vehicle and discovered it was an infant.
A married couple from Deroche — a man in his early 40s and a woman in her late 30s — were in the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene. The baby, under two years old, was airlifted to the hospital but died.
Glacier Media has learned the deceased worked as health-care workers and first responders in B.C. The man was a father, husband and a volunteer with the North Fraser Fire Department. The woman was a mother, wife and a nurse within the Fraser Health Authority.
They do not have any extended family in the province and next of kin has been notified.
Lot says one of the drivers crossed the middle line to cause the collision, but who did so has not been determined.
“That might take more than two weeks,” he says. “No alcohol or drugs are suspected in the crash. We do not know about speed yet but there was no evidence to indicate speed was a factor.”
Police say the driver of the transport truck is cooperating. The driver has suffered emotional injuries.
“We engaged victim services for him and that service has been talking to him,” says Lot. “He’s shook up.”
Police are still asking the public to provide video footage, including from dash cameras, from the 8100-block of Lougheed Highway between 3 a.m. and 3:45 a.m.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is asked to contact Agassiz RCMP at 604-796-2211.
