No animals harmed in massive Chilliwack barn fire

More than 40 firefighters fought the barn blaze that sent a large black plume of smoke into the sky.

No people or animals were injured during a large barn fire on Monday afternoon in Chilliwack.

Around 4 p.m., a massive plume of black smoke could be seen coming from Prest Road.

A total of 43 firefighters with the Chilliwack Fire Department responded to the structure fire.

Fire Chief Andrew Brown said the fire engulfed multiple vehicles and equipment on site.

Benjamin YH Ham was on a flight over the area with JoinAir Flight Training and captured the fire and smoke from the sky.

"[I was] very shocked," said Ham. "It went up in flames in a matter of minutes."

"Fire crews worked quickly to perform a defensive fire attack to bring the fire under control and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent homes and structures while securing a water supply,” said Brown.

Social media was filled with people posting photos and videos of the blaze.

Joanne McLeod wrote that her mom and dad live at the property.

“My mom got the horses, all the animals are safe,” said McLeod.

Brown said, thankfully, there were no animals inside the barn at the time.

"Firefighters were able to protect all adjacent structures with no injuries to either the public or firefighters,” he said.

The fire is still under investigation by both the RCMP and Chilliwack Fire Department. A cause has yet to be determined and released.
