Screening of 'The Wisdom of Trauma' and conversation coming to Squamish

Screening and online conversation on Feb. 17.

Squamish organizations are coming together to host an online screening of The Wisdom of Trauma, followed by a community conversation.

The Squamish Public Library, Under One Roof and Sea-to-Sky Community Action Team, invite locals to virtually view the film by Dr. Gabor Maté and come together online on Feb. 17 to discuss it.

The piece delves into how trauma affects behaviours and emotional well-being.

“Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal personnel are not concerned with fixing behaviours, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviours and diseases spring in the wounded human soul,” reads a news release about the event.

The event is free.

Registration will be required.

Go to the Squamish Library website to register.

Once signed up, participants will have 48-hours to view the film starting Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. to Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.

There will also be screening from 6 to 7:30 p.m, on Feb. 17.

The screening will be capped to 50 people and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The organizers hope locals will come together to watch the film in small COVID-19 safe groups.

Under One Roof will provide food to these small watch parties. To get more information about this, email [email protected]

Those interested in just the community conversation will also need to register through the library and can join on Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

“The screening and the facilitated discussion aim to bring Squamish together to have an open and respectful dialogue around trauma, addiction, mental health, and healing. The film is a helpful tool for supporting these kinds of conversations and encourages the development of a trauma-informed community,” the release states.
