Squamish marks Transgender Awareness Week with flag-raising on Monday

Transgender Pride flag to be raised Nov. 15 at 11 a.m.

Squamish events will mark Transgender Awareness Week starting Monday.

A transgender pride flag will be raised over Municipal Hall on Monday, Nov. 15 at 11. a.m.

“We embrace all members of our community regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, class, caste, religion, belief, sex, language, sexual orientation, identity, age, health or other status, and we will continue to create an inclusive community where all members feel seen, valued, heard and safe,” said Mayor Karen Elliott in a news release. “It is heartbreaking to know that there are those who live in our community who continue to face violence and discrimination for being who they are, and we are here to say that we see you, and you are welcome. I hope that we can all take part in this opportunity to learn and advocate for gender inclusivity.”

The Howe Sound Women's Centre will mark the week Nov.16 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the newly renovated centre at 38021 3rd Ave.

That event is meant to help folks learn more about transgender advocacy. All ages and identities are welcome.

Transgender Awareness Week — this year Nov. 13 to 20 — occurs annually in the week leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on Nov. 20.

This day commemorates trans, two-spirit and non-binary people who have lost their lives to transphobic violence.

There will also be a vigil at the Women's Centre on Nov. 20th at 6 p.m. More details to follow.
