Thursday night was a good time to be in the alpine.
A "severe geomagnetic storm" was responsible for setting off a dazzling northern lights show that set Whistler's peaks aglow on March 23.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Space Weather Prediction Center had previously issued a G-1 minor to G-2 moderate geomagnetic storm warning for Thursday through Saturday, March 25. The event proved to be stronger than expected, resulting in vivid aurora displays visible across much of the country Thursday night—even as far as southern Ontario. That said, Whistler's forecast is calling for cloudy skies throughout the weekend, so repeat northern lights sightings might be difficult to come by in the Sea to Sky.
If you missed it, don't stress: even through Thursday night's frequent cloud cover, Blackcomb's 7th Heaven webcam managed to catch the unmistakable but fairly rare sight of pink and green aurora borealis lighting up Whistler Mountain throughout the evening.
