'Emotionally gut-wrenching': Vancouver society fundraising for family of Starbucks stabbing victim

"This tragedy has impacted and sent shockwaves of grief and heartache across the community."

The local community is offering a helping hand following the city's sixth homicide.

Around 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, two men were involved in an altercation outside the Starbucks at West Pender and Granville streets when one of the men was stabbed, according to a press release from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).

The suspect was arrested at the scene and the victim died from his injuries in a hospital.

The stabbing happened in a public area with many people around; footage and photos from the scene are circulating online.

The victim, Paul Stanley Schmidt, left behind a wife and toddler.

Chinatown's Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society has started a fundraiser for the family.

"This tragedy has impacted and sent shockwaves of grief and heartache across the community and it is emotionally gut-wrenching to fathom what his family had to witness in horror," writes the non-profit.

As of March 29, the fundraiser cracked $111,000.

"We will ensure 100 per cent of the proceeds will go directly to the family of Paul Schmidt."

The society asks people to "be respectful to the family's wishes" and not circulate footage of the incident online.
