A motorcycle crash in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood on Christmas Eve has left a well-known racer dead.
The driver of the motorcycle collided with an SUV while he had a female passenger on the bike. The collision occurred at 4:25 p.m. on Dec. 24 at the intersection of Cornwall Avenue and Balsam Street.
Police said the driver died at the scene and the woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
On Jan. 2, Const. Tania Visintin with the Vancouver Police Department said the woman is still in hospital and has very serious, life-altering injuries.
Condolences being shared online for the driver identify him as Josh Rittberg.
Glacier Media confirmed with BC Coroners Service Rittberg is the deceased from the scene.
Rittberg, who is believed to have lived in Vancouver, is well-known as a motorcycle racer.
Police said the motorcycle was a 2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000, the same motorcycle Rittberg uses for competitions.
In 2024, Rittberg won the "most improved rider" at the Westwood Motorcycle Racing Club.
Many people took to social media to share condolences of Rittberg saying he will be missed.
A fundraiser created for Rittberg confirms it was his girlfriend on the motorcycle with him.
"A car was waiting to make a left turn and get on the main road. Unfortunately they turned right in front of Josh’s leaving him no room to react and he collided with the front right side of the car,” states the GoFundMe.
Police confirm speed was a factor in the crash.
The fundraiser is being set up to assist Rittberg’s son and his loved ones.
“Josh was more than just a motorcyclist; he was a cornerstone of our community. His passion for riding was infectious, inspiring us all with his dedication and enthusiasm,” states the GoFundMe.
