An update from representatives of the company planning a liquified natural gas (LNG) facility on the Squamish side of Howe Sound netted Gibsons Mayor Bill Beamish a chance to pitch for new hiking infrastructure May 26.
Woodfibre LNG representatives Christine Kennedy and Laura Prosko invited the board or individual communities to forward requests for recreation projects as applications to the company’s community partnership program.
Beamish’s suggestion was that Woodfibre consider funding the construction of a walking path connecting the Sunshine Coast side of the Sound to Squamish. “A little hiking path, three or four feet wide would be nice. We can walk from West Van (Vancouver) to Squamish but we can’t walk it on this side. It would be nice as part of a long-term plan.”
Woodfibre LNG has been visiting local governments in the region. After years of delays, the company announced in April construction would be going ahead. The company has said that construction is expected to begin next year, with the plant operational in 2027.
