Community effort: How the Squamish Rotary Club solved a timely issue

Downtown clock is now keeping time again after seven months.

The downtown clock is keeping time once again.

The "Rotary clock," at Cleveland Avenue and Winnipeg Street, has not been keeping time for about seven months.

The last battery change was during this past winter and the clock did not reset afterwards.

Don Patrick of the Rotary Club of Squamish told The Squamish Chief that the problem was rectified on Monday morning.

It takes a village to keep time

Club members gathered at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, to stake their claim in the adjacent parking lot, Patrick said. The aerial lift arrived from the Rental Network at 9:20 a.m.

"The [It's About Time] technician from Langley arrived on time at 10:50 a.m., and the clock was synchronized with the world by 11:30 a.m.," Patrick said, noting the clock's GPS had been shifted and thus was not keeping time.

Patrick thanked Tony Adamson, Peter Martin, Glen McKechran and Emery Goguen of the clock supporting team, and Vaheed Yazdam of Langley for the expertise.

The clock was purchased by Squamish Rotary in 2007 from a Chicago firm and installed with the help of donations from local businesses.

Its four batteries are good for another four to five years, Patrick said.
