The Downtown Squamish School Farm is hosting an open house for Squamish.
On Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., the school farm will be hosting an open house where the public can take a tour from students, learn about the programs and eat samplings of harvest. The farm is located between École Squamish Elementary and Howe Sound Secondary School.
The vision of the farm is only a couple of years in the making, with the first harvest happening in 2022 and the first full season of farming underway this year.
According to the website about the farm, some of the goals of the operation include: providing fresh food for families and community members, increasing food literacy among students, cultivating a local food system, combatting the climate crisis, and modelling a sustainable farm including reaching financial self-sustainability in three years.
The farm was awarded the Farm to School BC Pollinator Award for the Vancouver Area Regional Hub in 2023.
“This award celebrates K-12 schools in BC that display exceptional leadership in farm-to-school initiatives,” reads the Squamish Climate Action Network website.
“Students have the chance to participate in the Farm Studies course, utilize the produce in the Culinary Arts program, and engage in various collaborations, including donations to local food programs and interactive activities with elementary school students.”
