Halloween shenanigans set

Plenty of scary activities for Squamish residents, guests to take in

The spookiest time of the year is again upon us and there are several different ways for Squamish residents to take in Halloween festivities.

The West Coast Heritage Railway Park is inviting locals to check out the annual Frightfest event from Friday to Sunday (Oct. 26 to 30) at the park.

The popular mini-rail ride will be transformed into the mummy mini-rail and the Ghoul Express makes its return to Frightfest. The Ghoul Express sees a rail car transformed into a miniature haunted house and is the park's most frightening attraction, said Danielle Fourchalk, the park's guest services supervisor.

"Parents need to use their discretion if they decide to bring their kids on the Ghoul Express," she said. "It even creeps me out and I help make it. Last year, we had some good volunteers who really scared some people and this year it should be just as good."

There will also be trick or treating at the Brightbill House, as well as arts and crafts for children inside the main building.

Frightfest runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $5 for general admission and $3 for those who are members of the park.

Halloween isn't just for the kids, though, as Executive Suites Hotel and The Living Room will team up to present Monster Ball on Friday starting at 9 p.m. The event features DJs Papa Josh and Riddim Fernandez spinning and prizes for best male and female costume. Admission is $10 and those attending are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Squamish Food Bank.

The celebration continues on Saturday (Oct. 27) at the Cliffside Pub with its "Legendary" Halloween party starting at 9 p.m. DJ Turtle will be on the turntable, with a special surprise DJ opening. There will be prizes for best costume and no cover.

If live music is your thing, Blackberry Wood will perform during a Halloween-themed night at the Howe Sound Brew Pub on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to dress up and the pub will be decked out in Halloween style. Cover is free.

Those looking for a unique Halloween experience are invited to the Britannia Mine Museum for the Six Feet Under for Halloween event. The old mine tunnel will be decorated for the scary season and pumpkins will be available to carve. The event lasts from Saturday until Wednesday (Oct. 31) and patrons are encouraged to come to the museum in costume.

There's also the 14th annual Bass Coast Halloween Fundraiser at the Garibaldi Cinema on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. However, the event has been sold out for weeks. Approximately 600 people will pack the venue, with all proceeds going to the Squamish Helping Hands Society.
