Parents can reduce teen car crashes

Car crashes are the number one cause of death and serious injury among young drivers aged 16 to 20 in B.C. Teenagers represent only 6.5 per cent of the driving population but accounts for 13.4 per cent of those involved in car crashes.

Research indicates that car crashes involving young drivers can be reduced by up to a third when parents are actively involved in their teenager's driving education. The BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation's In the Driver's Seat workshops for parents, grandparents and caregivers of teen drivers, held at high schools and workplaces around the province, are designed to help families understand the risks and manage the process of their teenager's driving education. The Squamish Gardeners are pleased to have award-winning, best selling author and garden columnist, Steve Whysall coming to Squamish for his second visit on Monday (April 12) at 7 p.m. The location is the multipurpose room of the Quest University library. Whysall regularly gives talks to garden clubs and at garden shows and he has written articles for Gardens West and Garden Wise magazines as well as other books. Please be aware there is free underground parking and the cafeteria will be open. For members of the Squamish Gardeners, tickets are $10 each or $12 for non-members, which includes a chance to win a door prize. Tickets will be available at the door as well as at The Bookshelf, the Adventure Centre, The Village Garden Centre and at Garibaldi Nurseries.

Inside Edge, a local industry Society, is hosting their first monthly meeting on Thursday (April 15) at 7 p.m. at Squamish Oceanfront offices, 37321 Galbraith Rd. Leading Edge, in co-operation with Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation, will be hosting monthly meetings to enable business and cultural exchange. All are welcome. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 is holding a Spring Dance on Friday, April 16, beginning with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. A plant auction featuring auctioneer "Woody" begins at 7 p.m. Enjoy dancing to the music of the Jeffery James Duo from 8 p.m. to midnight. Tasty munchies will be available. A $5 entertainment donation at the door would be appreciated.

On Sunday (April 11) the Squamish Environmental Society will hold its monthly bird count. Please note the new time of 7 a.m. to meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company. An interesting and informative evening is planned at the Eagle Eye Theatre on Tuesday (April 13) at 7 p.m. when the Howe Sound Secondary Parent Advisory Council hosts a workshop for parents of teens and new drivers entitled In the Driver's Seat. Myra Caulfield is a member of the Hearts in Motion Walking Club and she also attends the exercise classes for seniors twice a week. Myra is celebrating her 92nd birthday this month and her daughter Kay Austen is hosting a special tea and Social for Myra at 1071 Glacier View Drive in Garibaldi Highlands on Sunday (April 11) from 3 to 6 p.m. Friends and neighbours are asked to drop by and offer their congratulations to this dear and fit little lady.

The Olympic Athlete Celebration is also on Saturday, April 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting with a parade to Pavilion Park on Cleveland Avenue. Lots of activities are planned including meeting our own local Olympians.

A Howe Sound Secondary School Grad Reunion is planned for Saturday, June 26, for all grads/non-grads and teachers who attended HSSS between 1978 and 1981.
