Several local artists unveiled a canvas mural painted in the lobby of the Aqua building in downtown Squamish on Wednesday, June 14.
Joie Liquorish wrote to The Squamish Chief that the concept of the project came about when Liquorish saw a “wondrous” painting on a neighbour’s door during a portion of 2021 when pandemic restrictions were in place.
“Such a feeling of joy and happiness surged through me,” said Liquorish about seeing the painting of a grey whale breaching from a sunflower field.
After meeting the artist who painted the image, Sarah Keller, they worked diligently to gain permission to paint a mural for their building’s lobby from their strata council over the last year.
Keller then drew up an image of the Squamish Estuary, which was projected onto a 6.4 metre (21 foot) canvas.
Nine artists living at the building helped complete the mural over the last month.
“To add ‘heart’ to the mural, four grandchildren, ages five to nine, painted animals, birds and fish in the scene,” Liquorish wrote.
The group revealed the painting to residents this past week and titled it “Harmony in Nature.”
