Squamish photographer creates eagle calendar

Partial proceeds of Brian Aikens' 2022 calendars go to Squamish Environment Society and a local school.
Squamish photographer Brian Aikens is turning his lens on a new medium — calendars — for a good cause or two just in time for holiday giving.

"We decided to try producing a photography wall art calendar. We wanted to be able to share some of the images Brian has captured in a different form... that could highlight about a dozen images," said his partner Jill Aikens

The original idea was to give calendars as gifts to family, but after they were so well received, the calendars are now available for sale to the wider community.

Photos of eagles cover the entire area of the 11x17" pages of the 2020 calendar.

Why Eagles?

"Eagles are just one of the many subjects that Brian likes to shoot," said Jill.

"They are such huge, impressive birds, known for their keen sight and ability to soar to great heights. Picking the photos for this calendar was daunting as there are thousands to choose from."

Images were predominantly taken in the 2020 to 2021 season, but some shots from previous years go back as far as 2016.

"One of the many fabulous things about living in the Squamish area is that this is one of the largest gathering spots of wintering bald eagles in North America," said Brian, a frequent photo contributor to The Squamish Chief's pages.

"Capturing good eagle photos without disturbing their ability to thrive is challenging. Some of the best photos I have taken have been when I head out in the dark of the early morning and set up in full camouflage near the river. If the eagles do not detect a human presence, I am more likely to see behaviours that capture their character. Getting good captures of eagles in flight is very rewarding to me."

The pair plans to donate partial proceeds of calendar sales to the Squamish Environment Society and to a local school. Details are still in the works.

"I hope this calendar helps people feel connected to the beauty and power of wildlife in this area, and to keep in mind each month what choices we can make to preserve and care for our natural world," said Brian.
