Take a step back in time

Local students invited to participate in Sea to Sky Heritage Fair

Sea to Sky Corridor students are encouraged to take a step back in time along with hundred of other area students whose history projects will be showcased with dozens of heritage-themed activities and performances at the 9th Annual Sea to Sky Regional Heritage Fair.

The fair takes place on Saturday, May 1 at the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Community History Centre in partnership with the Lynn Valley Elementary School, and local students are invited to start their projects now.

"It's a chance for them to explore a subject that they're curious about, and then to share what they have learned with the community and their families," said museum assistant director Shirley Sutherland.

The fair is open to students from grades four to 10, who are encouraged to get creative in their selection. Attendees to the fair can expect a tremendous range of projects, she said.

"We have projects about sports heroes," said Sutherland. "That one might be a big one this year."

In past years students have researched Canadians like artist Emily Carr and basketball inventor James Naismith. One year a student came to the fair dressed as Pierre Trudeau, complete with a red rose in their lapels.

A large number of schools have already signed up for the fair this year and individuals are also invited to participate. The event often ends up being a family affair that generates a lot of interest, said Sutherland.

"Often they end up doing the projects with family members, and it creates a nice dynamic, that's doing something different," said Sutherland.

"We draw a fair-sized crowd, about 1,000 people come to see the projects and participate in the event. We have all kinds of hands-on activities for people to participate in, not just the students."

Vancouver local Ivan Sayers, a popular costume historian who always a crowd favourite returns to the fair this year.

Participant activities include kid's boat building, and a guessing game involving B.C. artifacts re.

Participants are welcome to sign up with over two months remaining for project completion. Teachers can also register for their class's participation.

Squamish locals can get involved by contacting Diane Mitchell at the B.C. Museum of Mining, or Talya Fuchs at the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Society, her email is [email protected].
