If you walk Discovery Trail beyond Tim Hortons (on Progress Way), past Walmart and the Sandman Hotel, you have likely enjoyed the new paved extension.
It is part of Phase 2 of the multi-year Pioneer Way Extension project.
The paved path—which allows travellers to go from behind the Sandman, and pop out at Government Road—is already popular with walkers, riders, and those who use mobility scooters.
(Previously, folks could walk through, but the route was directly on the old bumpy highway and was often littered with debris, making it hard for folks with mobility issues to move through.)
But what about the next phase, the connector road?
Eventually, the project will extend Pioneer Way from Queens Way to the intersection of Government Road and Centennial Road to form a new arterial route.
Currently, the road, along the old Highway 99, is dirt.
"Pioneer Way Phase 3 is currently not in the Five Year Financial Plan as the desired road alignment and design has not been finalized, said Rachel Boguski, spokesperson for the municipality.
"Work is ongoing to finalize the road alignment in consideration of ongoing District planning activities and multiple landowners in the area."
Whenever the road goes through, it is sure to be a dramatic change in the area.
"This upgrade will eventually serve as a major entry into the Business Park from the north side of Squamish, help to decrease traffic through the residential North Yards neighbourhood, and upgrade the Discovery Trail to Government Road," reads the District site about the project.
Adjacent land, up to 17 acres on Pioneer Way, is up for sale by the District.
