Art, music, dance and weird hair are sweeping through Squamish again.
The third Art and Soul fundraiser is Nov. 6 at Totem Hall. The event is to raise money for the Squamish skate park.
The last two Art and Soul events raised over $15,000 and brought in around 600 people total, said Richard Trann, a volunteer on the skate park committee.
International and community artist start their creations at 8 p.m. and ticket holder can watch the artwork progress over the evening. A silent auction for the pieces runs throughout the night, and at midnight the three most bid on pieces go to a live auction.
Art and Soul is also the place to be to see some very avant-garde hair.
"Hair dressers work with models and they do bizarre things," Trann said. "It's really bizarre hair sculpting."
The models wander around Totem Hall throughout the evening like live art.
"We have a dance troupe coming in," Trann said. "They're a competitive jazz troupe."
A nine-piece local rhythm and blues band called Rhythm Method will be performing during the evening as well. There is a full bar, and a safe ride home program offered by Howe Sound Secondary grads.
"There's just so much happening," Trann said. "It's just something different for Squamish."
All the proceeds from the event go to the Squamish skate park.
The skate park committee has been around for two years, but in recent months has really pulled the project together.
"We've really progressed in the last nine months," Trann said.
The land for the park, near the Squamish Youth Centre has been cleared, and soon prefill is going to be dropped in the next couple of week. Construction may begin early next year.
Setting up a skate park is an expensive business. If you took into account the land donation from the municipality, you're looking at $400,000, Trann said.
Trann said many local businesses, individuals and organizations donated money and services like clearing and surveying.
But when completed, the park will provide a community service.
"I would guess there must be a few hundred skaters in this community," Trann said. "It will give a lot of people the opportunity to participate because there's a professional park."
"We worked with the youth and skaters in the community to design a park that they wanted."
Tickets are available at Dansez La Vie or Billie's Bouquet on Cleveland Avenue or the Eagle Run Coffee Company. Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 at the door. Art and Soul starts at 8 p.m.
