Chorus of champs offering free show

Entertainment

The Vancouver-based Westcoast Harmony Chorus will be in Squamish this weekend offering a free performance on Saturday (Sept. 17).

The 75 member women's a cappella chorus from the Lower Mainland is rehearsing for an upcoming International Competition to take place in Las Vegas.

Westcoast Harmony Chorus has won the Western Canada regional competition eight times since 1991. Almost as many times the chorus went on to win the big competition, which is attended by more than 10,000 women.

The free show in Squamish will be about 30 minutes in length and after the choreographed show the performers will stick around to meet the audience. The show will start at 4 p.m. and it is being held at the Sea to Sky Hotel.

According to Yvonne Meyer, the operations coordinator for the group, the show is the highlight of a weekend escape for the whole group.

The singers will arrive in Squamish on Friday (Sept. 16) and stay through the weekend.

"They'll be putting a little money into the Squamish economy," said Meyer.

She said Squamish was chosen for a weekend escape from the city because Squamish is "close to the big city" and she said Squamish still has a feeling of nature and freedom.

Meyer said the group hopes Squamish residents will take an interest in the concept and start a group here.
