Showcasing Canadian talent

Entertainment

Some of Squamish's most talented performers take the Eagle Eye Theatre stage Friday (Nov. 18) to celebrate Canadian music. The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association (HSPAA) presents Festival of Canadian Arts at 7:30 p.m. at the Howe Sound Secondary school stage. The show will feature all Canadian, local talent and mostly Canadian composed music. Included in the program is Howe Sound Dance Academy, the Mamquam Elementary School choir, Ryan Mooney's youth theatre project, Kori and Laurence, Jocelyn Petit and several solo student pianists.

The Mamquam Elementary School choir will be performing Remembrance Day Child, a piece written by a Vancouver teacher, with accompaniment by Tracy Stuchbery.

The youth theatre performers will present three musical numbers: Forget About the Boy from the musical Thoroughly Modern Mille, No One Is Alone from Into the Woods, and Ice Cream from Anne of Green Gables.

The show is a fundraiser for HSPAA's newly formed Access Music Education (AME) project.

"This is exactly what we are hoping to do for young people in Squamish," said the HSPAA's Stuchbery, "assist them in gaining access to music education by supporting them financially."

Stuchbery and Kristine Miles are both active music teachers in Squamish and through their involvement in the arts community and particularly with young people and their families, they've noticed a need for AME.

"It costs a lot of money to provide budding young musicians, dancers and actors with the education they need to become accomplished artists," said Stuchbery. "We want to support these young artists and encourage them to pursue their talents."

The bursary program was established last spring and applications will be made available by April 2006. The first bursaries will be awarded based on financial need and students' potential and commitment to studies in June 2006.

Tickets are $5 each and are available from Billie's Bouquet, Mostly Books, Highlands Video and at the [email protected]
