It doesn’t get much more idyllic than this: dancing barefoot in the grass of Junction Park while musicians perform against the sun-dappled evening backdrop of the looming Stawamus Chief. The vibrant swooping colours of the O'Siyam Pavilion frame the performers while families luxuriate on picnic blankets and lawn chairs. Children dart between the groups, laughing in the sunshine.
That’s the scene audiences can expect over the summer if they come out for the free Thursday evening concert series Amped in the Park, which kicks off on June 27 and runs until the middle of August. Performances take to the stage from 7 to 9 p.m. each Thursday.
With an emphasis on local talent, the program will feature a smorgasbord of musical genres, including rock, folk, and jazz.
For some of the performers, it will be their first time on the big stage.
“Squamish Arts is thrilled to provide this platform for performers to hone their craft before an appreciative audience,” said Clea Young, executive director of Squamish Arts.
“Audiences can expect to hear from local favourites and newcomers.”
The series was first conceived of in 2017, and came to fruition the following year thanks to a partnership between Squamish Arts and the District of Squamish. Interest has grown over the years, with 155 people attending the first concert of 2023, then over 200 crowding into the park for the final show in August.
