This morning the sixth annual Breakfast of Champions (as part of National Family Literacy Week) took place at the Squamish Public Library. Tomorrow (Jan. 28) the Scrabble for Literacy tournament will be held at the library starting at 9:30 a.m.

Tomorrow (Jan. 28) the Scrabble for Literacy tournament will be held at the library starting at 9:30 a.m. There are team and singles competitions for adults and children and three games are guaranteed. The entry fee is $20 for an individual and $30 for a team. Please take along your own Scrabble game. Pre-registrations are accepted at the Squamish Library and also at the Capilano College, Squamish Campus at 1150 Carson Place. The funds raised in this tournament support literacy programs at the library and Cap College. If you wish more information please call 604-892-3110. The sponsors of this event are McDonald's, Starbucks, Boston Pizza and Friends of the Library.



On Sunday (Jan 29) the Scrabble for Literacy Regional Playoff takes place in the meeting room in the Squamish Public Library starting at 10 a.m. Champions from tournaments in Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton and from the Sunshine Coast will compete.



Dick Cannings will be at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Jan. 29) at 8 p.m. for his book launch: Birds of Southwestern British Columbia. He works as a consulting biologist in Naramata and along with his brother Sydney, he has written many articles and several books and offers continuing education courses in Natural History.



Don't want to cook breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 29? Then head over to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 for the first family pancake breakfast of the year. It starts at 8:30 a.m. and you are guaranteed to come away feeling very full filled!



Long-time local resident Doreen Ramus has circumnavigated the globe by freighter and she will be the guest at the Squamish Public Library on Monday (Jan. 30) at 7 p.m. when she shares her adventures. As only Doreen can tell it, do plan to attend as she tells of her trips to South America, through the Panama Canal, around the Mediterranean and to Dunkirk and back again. Donations received will go to the Don Ross Outdoor Leadership program.



The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association is pleased to have pianist, Janina Fialkowska and founder of Piano Six return for a third time to Squamish. She will perform at the Eagle Eye Theatre on Friday, Feb. 24. Tickets are now on sale at Mostly Books, Billie's Bouquet and the Sea to Sky Hotel at $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students including university and college students. Last Wednesday, Jan. 18, ten residents at Hilltop House celebrated birthdays and the group of women hosting the birthday tea would like to send a special thanks along to Debbie at Save-On-Foods for the lovely way she wrapped (decorated) each colourful primula plant. It was much appreciated and cheered the recipients too!



The Teen Book Club at Squamish Public Library will next meet on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss An Earthly Knight by Janet McNaughton. Pizza is provided. Several people who attended high school in Squamish have formed a committee to plan a reunion to take place in September of this year. The reunion will include people who graduated in the years 1947 - 1963 and also include people who were in these classes but did not graduate. The committee would also like to hear from teachers who taught at the high school anytime during those years. Residents needing rides to Lions Gate Hospital or the Cancer Clinic for cancer treatments can call our local Cancer Society representative, Lail Weeks at 604-898-5595. The Squamish Arts Council and Between Shifts Theatre present the Janis Janus performance at the Eagle Eye Theatre tomorrow evening (Jan. 28). The doors open at 7 p.m. and the show is at 8 p.m. Admission is $30 at the door.



On Wednesday (Feb. 1) the Squamish Youth Soccer Association will hold its annual general meeting in the junior lounge, Brennan Park Recreation Centre at 7 p.m.

The Cedar Valley School will host an open house on Saturday Feb. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m., which includes a 20-minute presentation on Waldorf education.
