The Squamish Chamber of Commerce is hosting an All-Candidates' Meeting for the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast riding on Monday (June 21) at the Sea to Sky Hotel from 7 to 9 p.m. There are six candidates running and this meeting will give residents an opportunity to hear each candidate's platform and meet them.
Residents who wish to take advantage of advance voting may do so at Brennan Park Recreation Centre at the aquatic centre lobby today (June 18), Saturday (June 19) and Monday (June 21) from noon to 8 p.m. The general election takes place next Monday (June 28) will polls open at Brennan Park from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Probably anyone who really wishes to vote will find a way to get to Brennan Park on June 28 but for those without transportation, including seniors and those living downtown who don't wish to ask anyone, there is no public transportation to the centre! Your best bet is to get in touch with the office of one of the candidates running, as I'm sure they will have transportation available.
A time to honour fathers and grandfathers is Sunday (June 20) and the B.C. Museum of Mining is holding a special Father's Day celebration. Dad and one child will be admitted free of charge and there will be a special cake cutting at 11 a.m. Yukon Dan will be on hand and will give a gold panning demonstration. There are other festivities planned and the Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the last tour leaving at 4:20 p.m.
The sixth annual Squamish Garden Tour will be held on Sunday, July 11th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be 10 great gardens to view. Tickets cost $10 and will go on sale Monday (June 21) at the Squamish Public Library, Billie's Bouquet and Anna's Attic. Raffle tickets will be sold at the gardens.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is the next book the Teen Book Club at Squamish Public Library has chosen. Any teens age 13 and up are welcome to go to the library and sign out a copy as discussion of the book will take place on Tuesday, July 6 at 5:30 p.m. Along with the discussion, enjoy pizza and pop! Crime Stoppers of Squamish/Whistler sponsors a Pet of the Month as a fundraiser and the past few winners have been dogs, but congratulations to the June winner, Jody Hopkins of Whistler and her pet cat Brodie. On Tuesday, June 8 the Squamish Royal Purple Lodge held a dinner honouring a special lady on her special birthday. Marguerite Hendrickson was the first Honoured Royal Lady in Squamish in 1950 and now, after residing here all these years, she is moving to Vancouver Island. Other charter members in attendance were Jean McKinnon, Dorothy Chapman, Colleen Drenka, Dorothy Dawson and Vi Antosh. A beautiful framed photo of Squamish was presented to Marguerite.
The Sea to Sky Freenet is once again offering non-profit Summer Cybercamps for kids ages seven to 11 and youth ages 11 to 14 in July and August. The fee is on a sliding scale. Squamish Public Library is hosting its annual Summer Reading Club and the theme this year is "Anything Can Happen When You Read!" Registration for this free club, open to all ages, starts Saturday, July 3 and continues throughout the summer. Children will receive a free reading booklet, stickers and a chance to win some wonderful prizes. I'll have more information next week on the Hooked on books program for six- to 12-year-olds.
Sunday evening Scripture readings are taking place at the Brackendale Art Gallery Chapel with Jim Stevens. On June 20, Jim will read from Colossians and Galatians and on June 27, First and Second Thessalonians and Second Corinthians. The readings will start at 8 p.m.
There was an item in the Chamber News section of last week's Chief regarding the Squamish Farmers' Market. It will be held in downtown Squamish in the parking lot between the Chamber office and Victoria Street off Cleveland Avenue. It will be open each Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting on June 26 through to Sept. 4, excluding Aug. 28, the date of the Fall Fair.
