ABOUT TOWN: Nominations for Order of Squamish due

There are many individuals, community groups and businesses who are worthy of nominations for the newly-created Order of Squamish.

There are many individuals, community groups and businesses who are worthy of nominations for the newly-created Order of Squamish. Those who work tirelessly to make our community a better place to live and those who spend hour upon hour volunteering their service and time to individuals, seniors and others deserve a nomination. The deadline for submissions is Monday (Nov. 15) and there is a form in The Chief for you to fil in. the recipients will be honoured on Dec. 13 by Squamish Council.



It is time for all of us to start thinking about Community Christmas Care and what we can contribute towards providing Christmas hampers to families and individuals. Last year some 295 hampers were distributed and there is no indication to date that less will be needed this year. The chairperson this year is Rev. Mike Stuchbery from St. John's Anglican Church and he is ably assisted by other clergy and many other dedicated volunteers. Non-perishable food items can be dropped into specially-marked boxes in the supermarkets. Both outlets of the Squamish Credit Union are accepting cash or cheque donations or mail your donation to Community Christmas Care, Box 236, Garibaldi Highlands, V0N 1T0.



New storytimes are now being offered at the Squamish Public Library. A second session of Time for Tots, for children 18 months to three years, begins on Sunday (Nov.14) from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Please pre-register at the library. Also on Sunday (Nov. 14) from 1:30 to 2 p.m., Punjabi Storytime for preschoolers starts. Join the staff for this weekly event where stories and songs will be in Punjabi and English.



The Squamish Estuary Conservation Society will meet at 8 a.m. at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company on Sunday (Nov. 14) to begin the monthly bird count. Newcomers are always welcome and for those who wish more information, please call Judith at 604-892-3340.



On Sunday, Nov. 21 when the 28th annual Squamish Fall Classic is held, it will be a fundraiser for the Angela James Memorial Scholarship. There are many locations to pick up entry forms including Sea to Sky Ocean Sports, Billie's Bouquet and the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. There is a special school challenge award to the school with the most participants. T-shirts (150 guaranteed) will be available at $25 for adults, $15 for students, and $40 for families (2 adults, one child and $5 for additional children). Books and Cheer is at the Squamish Public Library and will be held on Thursday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Trio Arioso will be playing classical music and some holiday favourites. The $15 admission includes hors d'oeuvres and nibbles and two complimentary beverages courtesy of Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company and Peller Estates Winery. The silent auction fundraiser will have some interesting items up for bid!



There are still many appointments available for mammograms at the Squamish General Hospital from Nov. 17 to Dec. 2. To arrange your appointment, please call 1-800-663-9203. On the day of your appointment, please do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or perfume.



For the past several months, Crime Stoppers of Squamish/Whistler have had a fundraiser in the form of the Pet of the Month. This month, November, is the last for this particular project but pet owners have until Nov. 30 to pick up applications from their local vets and pet food stores. The winners have really enjoyed having their professional photo session with Doug Burne. In October, the winner was Maren Bruun and her dog Moxie. All of this effort is to help prevent crime in our communities. Look for a new fundraiser by Crime Stoppers in the coming year.



The last Squamish Creative Connections for Seniors meeting was held on Sept. 20 and at that time the priorities were: shopping, knowledge of services, transportation, seniors' centre, nutrition and safety. A further meeting will be held in the Tantalus Seniors' Centre on Wednesday, Nov 17 at 2 p.m.



Those delicious chocolatey mint cookies being sold by the Girl Guides have been selling well and if you are interested in purchasing a box or two, please call Monique at 604-898-5019 before they are all sold.



The next Teen Book Club meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7 and the title of the book to be discussed is The Sword of the Rightful King by Jane Yolen (an award-winning new version of the ancient Sword in the Stone legend). The Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet at the Squamish Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. on Friday Nov. 19. For more information call Elaine at 604-898-9498.



Birthday wishes go out to several residents of Hilltop House this month. Congratulations to Knud Brunn, Doreen Hyland, Thelma MacDonald, Laurane Norstrom, Bill Galley, Mary Jones, Thelma Whitfield, Donald Shepherd and Dorothy Griffiths. The birthday celebration will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.



The Squamish Community Foundation will be the big winner at the Dress to Impress Casino Night at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company on Saturday, Nov. 20. The cost is $30 per person or $50 per couple. Tickets are available at Howe Sound Inn, Style Zone, Black Tusk Realty, ReMax Realty and Tantalus Bike Shop.



Tickets are now available for the upcoming presentations of The Sound of Music at Billie's Bouquet and the two Squamish Credit Union branches. Dates for the musical are Nov. 25-27 and Dec. 2-4 at the Eagle Eye Community Theatre.
