ABOUT TOWN: Squamish Days ready to roll

It takes much hard work behind the scenes, including many meetings, to ensure the annual Squamish Days Loggers Sports weekend goes off without a hitch.

It takes much hard work behind the scenes, including many meetings, to ensure the annual Squamish Days Loggers Sports weekend goes off without a hitch. It all gets under way today (July 30) including the Mid Summer Music Festival, Bed Races tonight at 7 p.m. and the Haulback Hoedown at 9 p.m. Youngsters always love seeing Ronald McDonald and he will be at the Children's Sports event at Stan Clarke Park starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (July 31). Along with races for all ages is the decorated bike contest. There's free hot dogs and drinks too!



There is no admission charge to the Novice and Intermediate Loggers Sports show at the Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (July 31). During this show ant the World-Class Open Loggers Sports Show on Sunday (Aug. 1) there will be a 50/50 draw with proceeds going to the Weekend to End Breast Cancer.



Seniors are invited to participate in the Squamish Days Seniors Bingo at the Royal Canadian Legion tomorrow night (July 31) at 6:45 p.m.



For many years the Squamish Days Elks Loggers Breakfast is the way many people start their day off and Sunday (Aug. 1) will be no exception as the Squamish Elks and Royal Purple Lodges prepare to serve up a delicious breakfast to all comers. It is served up from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. I believe this will be the last loggers breakfast held at the parking lot on Second Avenue.



The Squamish Days Festival Parade through downtown Squamish on Sunday (Aug. 1) at 11 a.m. will be led this year by Squamish's own ironwoman Mae Palm as parade marshal. The parade chair is Beryl Taylor of the Squamish Emergency Program Society. You will see members of the SEP in their blue t-shirts assisting in the parade, traffic patrol and in many other roles throughout the weekend.



The Brennan Park Recreation Centre will be closed on Monday (Aug. 2) but the Aquatic Centre will be open from 12:30 to 3:30 for an everyone welcome swim.



Teens ages 13 years and up are reminded the Teen Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will next meet on Tuesday (Aug. 3) at 5:30 p.m. for their book discussion on the book Junk by Melvin Burgess. Mini Rail Day is coming to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Sunday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is sponsored by West Coast Mini Rail and there will be steam and diesel locomotives operating all day.



Programs at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre have made for great outdoor experiences for young people this summer. Olympic Daze for six- to 12-year-olds will be held Aug. 3-6 each day 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants will play sports and games that will focus on teamwork. Tennis lessons for all ages is ongoing for those nine years and up. Hike and bike camp for ages six to nine years will be held Aug. 9-13 and also on those days, Crazy Climbing is for the nine- to 12-year-olds. For adults, there is a day hike (approx. six hours) to Petgill Lake on Saturday, Aug. 7. Register for these programs at the BPRC or phone 604-898-3604 for more information.



Crime Stoppers of Squamish, Pemberton and Whistler sponsor the Pet of the Month fundraiser and the July winner is Rene Champers and her dog Jennifer. Everyone who owns any kind of pet may enter as often as they wish at only $5 per entry. Vets and pet food suppliers, some coffee shops and Burneing Images have application forms.

Crime Stoppers is a community-based service awards program that combines police, media and the public in combating and solving crime in the Sea to Sky corridor. Crime Stoppers strives to overcome two major problems in the community - citizen passiveness and reluctance to get involved. The Squamish Music and Art Exchange at the New Port Gallery is offering children's art classes with Leilan Beckett during the month of August with drawing from Aug. 9 to 13, painting Aug. 16 to 20 and crafts from Aug. 23 to 27. Wood carving and tool making for wood carving with Dave Cunningham will be held Aug. 2 to 13.
