An alarm at a business south of downtown Squamish appears to have been foiled when an alarm interrupted a person or persons who broke into the building on the weekend.
On Sunday (Nov. 20), Squamish RCMP received a report from a security firm that had received and responded to an alarm at the business in the 37000 block of Galbraith Avenue on the Squamish oceanfront peninsula, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement.
Police arrived and confirmed that the business had been broken into and that "a large amount of computers and tools had been stacked by a door, ready to be taken" by the suspect or suspects. Interior doors had been damaged and access to various rooms gained, Pride said.
"It was apparent [that] the suspects were interrupted by the alarm and were unable to take their intended items," Pride said.
An alarm also appears to have scared away someone who attempted to break into a business along Highway 99 during the past week. On Tuesday (Nov. 22) just before 5 a.m., a front window was smashed in an attempt to gain entry, but the alarm apparently scared the person away. Nothing was stolen.
Man faces assault charge
A 61-year-old Squamish resident is facing a charge of assault after an altercation with another man on Saturday (Nov. 19). At around 1:30 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault in progress in the 39000 block of Galbraith Avenue. At the home, police found two drunken males, both local residents described as "known to police," Pride said.
A verbal dispute between the two men had escalated into a fight, with one man having suffered undetermined injuries that required medical evaluation at Squamish General Hospital.
Bikes stolen
Police are looking for a black, 21-speed Raleigh women's mountain bike that was stolen from an underground parking lot of a home in the 1400 block of Pemberton Avenue on Saturday (Nov. 19). The theft occurred overnight and the bike was not secured in the underground.
A second bike, a Cannondale Profit 18-speed mountain bike valued at around $800, was reported stolen from an underground storage unit in the 1200 block of Main Street on Saturday. The theft of the second bike occurred sometime between Nov. 5 and Nov. 19, Pride said.
Crime Stoppers reach out
Sea to Sky Crime Stoppers is stepping up efforts to make the public aware of the service offered by the volunteer-driven, non-profit society, which aims to reduce crime by allowing those who have witnessed illegal activity to report it while remaining anonymous.
Last year the society distributed community-specific posters to businesses throughout the Sea to Sky region. The posters are ready for distribution and Crime Stoppers welcome requests from retailers and businesses in the area, officials said in a statement.
A reward of up to $2,000 is offered to those whose tips result in a conviction or the recovery of stolen property. To contact Crime Stoppers, phone 1-800-222-8477, visit www.solvecrime.ca or text BCTIP and your message to CRIMES (274637).
