'Beaver' balding for bucks

Community

The latest champion for the BC Children's Hospital says good-natured ribbing got him to pledge his foot-long hair and beard to Balding for Dollars.

William "Beaver" Lewis of Beaver Motorcycle Services laughs about buddies pushing him into cutting hair that hasn't seen a blade in two years. He adds more solemnly that he also thought of his own six grandchildren as well as a young friend who was born without hair and wears a wig every day.

"I just figured I'd do it for the kids," he said.

Lewis will donate his hair to create a wig.

Although his friends are goading him into it, Lewis's girlfriend has jokingly vowed to match any pledges to make him keep his hair. The change is sure to be dramatic.

"I got a toque to put on right after," said Lewis, then adds: "It's no big deal. Everything grows back hopefully."

Lewis will join numerous other residents going bald at Squamish Station next Saturday (April 2) to raise funds for B.C. Children's Hospital cancer patients.

Anyone who wants to shave their head is asked to pick up a pledge form (available at The Chief office on Second Avenue) and bring it with collected pledges to Squamish Station on April 2. For more information contact Cindy Turner at 604-892-3142.
