Sunday night jazz is coming to the Brackendale Art Gallery Café & Culture Centre.
The fall concert line-up for The BAG has been released and will feature a number of jazz artists as well as some Squamish fan favourites.
Curated by Vancouver jazz impresario and saxophonist Cory Weeds, the Sunday night jazz series will highlight some of New York City’s and Canada’s finest jazz performers, including the Cory Weeds Quartet, the Jacob Chung Quartet and the Leading Ladies Little Big Band.
The BAG Society artistic director Catherine McInnes has curated the West Coast String Master series, which will feature genre-bending string players such as The Marc Atkinson Trio, Steve Dawson and Q.
Veteran BAG performer Valdy will also take the stage on Oct. 4.
“The best way to support The BAG is by coming to shows. As a newly reopened concert venue, we’re very much in an audience development phase, working hard to develop an inclusive, diverse concert culture in Squamish,” McInnes said.
“We’re offering shows in multiple genres to appeal to different demographics of live music fans—jazz, blues, multiple rock genres, pop, DJs, bluegrass, country, roots, alternative and more.”
McInnes hopes The BAG can become the place where locals and visitors alike come to watch live music.
“Just as the costs of pretty much everything have gone up significantly – housing, groceries, restaurant meals - so have the costs of running a live music venue and paying touring artists," she said.
“We’re hopeful that live music consumers in Squamish will recognize the value of some of the artists we’re presenting this fall and choose to attend shows here instead of driving into Vancouver to see similar shows where they also have to deal with additional costs such as gas and parking.
“With a population of almost 30,000 in Squamish now, we want to get the word out that The BAG is a great local destination for fantastic live music at a reasonable price.”
The BAG has also put out a callout for volunteers at the concerts.
“Help is needed with setting up and putting away chairs after seated shows, working the door, and helping to clear dishes during shows,” reads a BAG press release.
“This is a very affordable way to see a show since volunteers don’t have to pay for a ticket in exchange for helping out.”
