Local artists who are looking for their work to be featured on the streets of Squamish are being encouraged to submit their work for the street banner project.
The District of Squamish and the Squamish Arts Council announced the 2022 version of the project recently. Banners will be constructed for streetlight poles in downtown, Garibaldi Estates, Tantalus Road and Brennan Park Recreation Centre. The last call for submission is March 21.
“Street banners create a sense of community pride and give us the opportunity to highlight the extensive local art scene that thrives here,” said Katherine Kunze of the Squamish Arts Council in a news release.
“Squamish is a place unlike any other and we are looking for banner submissions that highlight the unique community that we're all so lucky to belong to.”
Submissions will be reviewed by the Squamish Arts Council and will be judged based on “originality, character and artistic merit,” reads the release.
The winner chosen will receive $2,000 and will work directly with the printing company to implement their design.
“Squamish is fortunate to have such a vastly talented artistic community, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to use this type of medium to showcase their artwork to locals and visitors alike,” said Mayor Karen Elliott in the release.
Those interested in submitting must meet certain eligibility requirements, according to the Squamish Arts Council website. Among the requirements: artists must reside in Squamish or identify as a member of Squamish Nation and be able to meet the timeline. The website encouraged youth, students, professional and emerging artists to participate.
