Day two of the 2024 CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship is complete; here’s how each national team did.
Game 1
The first game on Nov. 7 saw Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners take on the Brandon University Bobcats.
According to Brent Mutis of CapU, goals came early and often for the Mariners as they recorded an 8-0 win over the Bobcats.
The first goal came in the ninth minute on a penalty-goal kick from midfielder Taylor Kinley.
The penalty kick was awarded when Kinley got tangled up near the goal line, and a foul was assessed to the Bobcats' keeper.
VIU then tallied three times in six minutes with midfielder Courtney Ingram, All-Canadian forward Saki Meshida and Kinley again.
Forward Jade Dillabough and defender Ella Gignac rounded out the first half scoring for the Nanaimo-based side.
VIU added another two goals in the second half, further securing the win.
The players of the game were VIU forward Jade Dillabough and Brandon’s forward Kenadie Janzen.
Game 2
The Capilano Blues secured a 1-0 victory over the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics in the waning minutes of the match.
In minute 86, the Blues were awarded a free kick and midfielder Michaela Salvino delivered a long, bending drive that drew a cluster of players near the far post, but it was first-year defender Erika Di Lorenzo who got a head on it to knock it home.
The Mystics pushed forward, and there were some nervous moments for the Blues in the four minutes of added injury time, but they managed to hold on to the final whistle.
Players of the game were CapU defender Erika Di Lorenzo and MSVU goalkeeper Morgan Gillis.
Game 3
There will be a new CCAA women’s soccer champion in 2024 as les Nomades du Collège Montmorency knocked off the defending title holders Seneca Sting by a 1-0 score on Thursday afternoon.
Fresh off their win by the same score over PACWEST champion VIU to open the tournament, Montmorency hunted down a bigger game against Seneca.
The winning goal came in the 18th minute off a corner kick by defender Aella Leysour De Rohello that first-year defender Audrey Lefebvre was able to head with a diving effort.
Seneca mounted an offensive attack in the three minutes of injury time at the end of the game and generated a couple of good looks on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Players of the game were Seneca defender Manmeet Atwal and Montmorency midfielder Kelly-Anne Boucher.
Game 4
For the sixth time in the last eight years, it will be an all-Quebec affair in the gold-medal match after les Aigles du Collège Ahuntsic defeated the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder 1-0.
Scoreless at halftime, the game moved a bit in CUE’s favour in the second half, with the Thunder pushing more possession into Ahuntsic territory.
It was a counterpunch by Ahuntsic that produced the winning goal after they were able to get the ball into the area in the 68th minute. Following a scramble in front of the CUE net, the ball fell to midfielder Ashley Jacques who rolled it over the line.
The players of the game were Ahuntsic keeper Anaïs Marie-Luce and CUE keeper Madison Kempster.
