As part of its Black History Month, Capilano University is inviting the community to a free screening of Hidden Figures.
The screening will take place on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Squamish Public Library, with doors opening at 3 p.m.
The event is free and open to all, with snacks provided. Families, students, and community members of all ages are encouraged to attend.
“This film is a powerful reminder of the resilience and brilliance of Black women in history, and we hope it sparks important conversations within our community,” said Marisa Navarro Ros, project manager of the Squamish Family Literacy Program at Capilano University in an email.
In addition to the screening, the Squamish Welcome Centre has set up a Black History Month display featuring books and resources that highlight Black history, culture, and achievements. Their pricing model is based on “Pay What You Can, Pay What Feels Right, with a minimum of $3 per book.”
The Squamish Public Library is also showcasing a collection of novels by Black authors, including The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates. To read the full list, visit their website.
Readers are encouraged to register in advance for the film screening at forms.office.com/r/22UCEgejD0.
