Conservation officers deal with numerous bear conflicts

Conservation officers have responded to numerous bear sightings and conflicts in the last week. A sow and three cubs have been accessing fruit trees in Garibaldi Estates and Highlands. A bear has been attempting to access garbage in Garibaldi Highlands has been foiled by bear resistant garbage totes. Conservation officers have been deploying non-lethal deterrents the bear.

A sow and two cubs have been spotted frequently in the Brackendale area. A bear has been killing chickens in Brackendale. There was an unconfirmed sighting of a grizzly bear in Brackendale. A bear was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 99 near Garibaldi Way. A small bear was immobilized by conservation officers in Brackendale - the bear was relocated in its home range.

A large bear was caught in the downtown area and, due to its high level of conflict, was destroyed.

Residents are reminded to secure attractants and report conflicts 24 hours a day to 1-877-952-7277.

Postal worker chases suspect

On Tuesday (Sept. 21) at 6:30 a.m., an employee at the Lions Bay post office heard a noise in area and found an unknown male inside the post office. The male fled and was chased by the employee, the male got away in a light blue colored Dodge Caravan. The matter is still under investigation.

Cocaine dealer busted

On Thursday, Sept. 16 member on patrol located a well known 36-year-old male on Bailey Street who was wanted on outstanding warrants out of Vancouver Police Department. The male was taken into custody and a subsequent search located a quantity of cocaine and crack cocaine packages for sale and hidden in a body cavity.

The male was released to appear in court on Oct. 27 for the charge of possession of a controlled substance and was released by a Justice of the Peace on the outstanding warrants from Vancouver.

Thieves target bike renter

On Thursday, Sept. 16 at 9:25 p.m. police received an intrusion alarm at the Sea to Sky Adventure Company on Scott Crescent. Attendance confirmed a smashed window. Police dog services attended and received a track which was followed a distance and then turned negative. Suspect(s) stole a silver and beige colored stereo and speaker valued at $250 with damage to the building estimated at $350. The matter is still under investigation.

Thieves steal wiring

On Tuesday, Sept. 14 a report was received that suspect(s) broke into a construction site on Cleveland Avenue and cut out and stole a section of electrical wire from the building, which had been installed during the construction. The wire is estimated to be worth $350, the cost of re-installation of the wire is estimated at $2,500. The matter is still under investigation.

Bikes stolen

Sept. 21 owner reports that a Ladies Katmandu mountain bike silver and pink in colour which was locked outside their residence on Third Avenue was stolen. The bike and lock were both stolen.
