Council meeting disrupted

News

Briefs from the meeting of District of Squamish Council held on Tuesday, Nov. 1:

The meeting of local lawmakers ground to a sudden halt at 7:31 p.m. when an angry resident jumped from his front row seat in of the Council Chamber public gallery.

Ian Farquahar learned earlier in the meeting that the lot he is renting across from the West Coast Railway Heritage Park will be cleaned up by the DOS.

The property is the subject of an ongoing action under the unsightly property bylaw. Four weeks ago, Farquahar was given three weeks to bring the site to an acceptable state. Cliff Doherty, the director of protective services, said the land wasn't cleaned to an acceptable standard so lawmakers confirmed an order for DOS staff to go onto the property to clean it up.Farquahar wasn't happy about the decision and one minute into a public hearing on a new development he expressed his dissatisfaction by yelling at the members of Council before he was ejected from the meeting.

Developments get support

The members of Council gave approval to the Galleries development at Garibaldi Springs and the Amble Path project next to the Spiral Trailer Park on Government Road.

Coun. Corinne Lonsdale said she couldn't support Amble Path because of three major concerns. She said she's worried about the potential for future flooding at the site, the density of the neighbourhood and she questioned the developer's claim the homes will be affordable.

Mayor Ian Sutherland said the proposed new homes will be affordable compared to the existing housing choices in the community.
