Darrell Bay cleanup planned for next week

Employees of Woodfibre LNG and FortisBC to hold new event on Wednesday, Sept. 16
Darrell Bay
The area around the ferry terminal at Darrell Bay is one area to be cleaned up on Sept. 16.

As part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, Woodfibre LNG and FortisBC employees will be slipping on rubber gloves and pulling out garbage bags to clean up the Darrell Bay shoreline.

“We’ve been in the community now for a couple of years and the office has been open for quite some time, we’ve got more staff there that we felt we needed to get more involved in community events that involve our own staff participation,” said Byng Giraud, vice-president of corporate relations for Woodfibre LNG.

“This looked like something that is consistent with the work we are doing on the [Woodfibre] site, through the creosote pile removal and the soil cleanup. It is consistent with the work we are doing
as a company.”

The cleanup will include Squamish Harbour, from the mount of the Mamquam Blind Channel south past Darrell Bay to the log booms of Darrell Bay. Boats may be necessary to take workers to the site.

“We’ve been a part of the Squamish community for more than 25 years,” said FortisBC spokesman Trevor Boudreau. “Our employees live and work in the community; it’s important to us that we give back where we can.”

Giraud said he welcomes Squamish residents to come out and get involved if they are interested, but he said this event is about the employees getting out and doing their part.

If there isn’t a lot of trash, the group will expand further afield, Giraud said. “There is often more garbage than you think there is, when you just have a quick look.”

The cleanup gets underway Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. For more information or to help out, contact the Woodfibre LNG and FortisBC Community Office in Squamish at 604-880-8135.
