One of Squamish's most beloved community members, Dr. LaVerne Kindree, passed away on Saturday (Sept. 26) at the age of 88, family has confirmed, although further details have yet to be released.

Dr. Kindree leaves behind an inspiring legacy, which was honoured last month when he received the country's highest civilian medal of distinction and became a member of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Kindree's contributions to well-being echo across the country but are felt most powerfully throughout the Squamish community. A pillar for health and community issues since settling in Squamish with his wife Norma in 1948, Dr. Kindree was the region's sole physician for several years and was vital to establishing the Squamish General Hospital.

The Chief will further explore the memory of Dr. Kindree this week.
