A local teenage boy is in critical condition at BC Children's Hospital and a Westbank, B.C., man has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm following a collision in the Garibaldi Highlands on Saturday (July 29).

At 10 a.m., RCMP and Fire Rescue attended to the collision after a 29-year old man driving a 2001 Volkswagen Passat hit a 16-year-old boy on a bicycle at the corner of Newport Ridge Road while travelling northbound on Tantalus Road.

The boy was transported to Squamish General Hospital and airlifted to BC Children's Hospital where he remains in critical condition with head injuries.

Grow-op in business

RCMP members investigating an attempted burglary call found more than the usual inventory at a Pasco Rd business on Saturday (July 29). RCMP found what they're calling a "large" marijuana grow operation. The discovery resulted in the arrest a 61-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman at the scene.

At 8 p.m. RCMP responded to a report of an attempted break-and-enter to an unidentified business on Pasco Rd. called in by a passer-by. The door to the business was unsecured so RCMP entered to determine the situation and clear the building of any occupants.

Upon the discovery of the grow-op, the building was secured and a search warrant obtained. An investigation is still underway to determine if the building's owner knew of the operation and whether the arrested man and woman will face charges.

70-year-old found on train tracks

Mystery still surrounds an incident that ended with a 70-year-old man lying perpendicular to train tracks moments after a train went by. At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Monday (July 29), RCMP received a call from individuals who believed a man had been hit by a train. The individuals were picking berries near Hunter Place and Pemberton Ave. and looked up when a train went by to see the Caucasian man lying injured on the tracks.

RCMP are not sure how the man fell, but said the fall resulted in head injuries that caused him to be airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital. They don't believe, however, that full impact with the train occurred since his trauma was not consistent with such a collision and he didn't appear to have been thrown or dragged any distance. An investigation is ongoing.

Car 'prop' confusion at Hwy. 99 cliff base

On Sunday (July 30) at approximately 2 p.m., RCMP contacted Search and Rescue (SAR) to investigate a report of an overturned car on a cliff below Highway 99 near Deeks Creek. A passing boater had taken a photograph of an overturned pink car on Saturday afternoon but had not reported it until Sunday, according to SAR reports.

SAR members from Squamish and Lions Bay along with Squamish RCMP attended the location but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Further investigation confirmed the car had been lowered down the cliff into position by a crane, as part of a movie stunt, and had been removed after they completed the stunt.
